Romancing Vintage Jakarta: When Trem Was The Way

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Cool Vintage

This is Jakarta, not San Fransisco.

Jakarta governor election –first round they say, like we need another one– was just finished. But no, that is not my point of interest. I just want to share interesting photos about unbelievably amazing Jakarta which I took fromĀ Greetings From Jakarta, Postcards Of A Capital 1900 – 1950, a newly published book by Scott Merrillees. These photos were actually picture postcards produced in Jakarta in 1920-1950s and unfortunately among the few historical sources of what the city looked in the past. As you can see in the pictures here, it’s hard to believe that Jakarta was such a modern, orderly, charming and cultured city, not to mention peaceful too. A city full of potential to be a world class city that we could have been proud of. O back to the next Jakarta governor, I think these picture postcards should be a good inspiration before he even governs the city. Happy Wednesday everyone!

Trem is definitely a more charming way than busway, no?

And train as a city transportation, just what every modern city needs!

Another mode of mass transportation. Looks like Titanic, but no it is not. though it looks as magnificent

Traditional mode of transportation and modern building side by side peacefully.

My Vintage Find: Look What I Get!

An antique glass painting of three ladies in kimonos which I found at Hana-Zuno flea market in Tokyo is a real steal. Besides, it goes just beautiful with the Chinese tennis player lady from Taman Puring. Do you have a street find or a flea market buy that you want to share here? Please send the photo(s) to luthfi_hasan@yahoo.com. Lets find and share!
