Last week I went to Tanah Teduh, in Jati Padang, Pejaten, and felt so proud to be an Indonesian. How can I not? Tanah Teduh is a complex of 20 houses built by leading Indonesian architects with a strong commitment to environment and local materials. So in two hectares of land, no tree-felling was allowed, ponds retained for water processing and catchment and, natural light and air flow optimized to reduce electricity consumption. Cool. And all Indonesian-made materials are taking a center stage here, indoor and outdoor. The interior of the show unit for example, is an exhibition of fine Indonesian furniture — all vintage from the 60′s and 70′s. This is where my vintage-obsessed mind goes ecstatic, naturally. I totally agree with Ronald Akili, the founder of this project who says: “I hope Tanah Teduh will be a source of inspiration and a project that Indonesia could be proud of.” Bravo architects Andra Matin, Wendy Djuhara, Anthony Liu, Yori Antar, Adi Purnomo, Ahmad Djuhara, Eko Prawoto, Ferry Ridwan, Tan Tik Lam, and Zenin Adrian who made it happen. So last week I was proud and impressed by my fellow Indonesians. I am sure you would be too. Sources: tanahteduh.com and doinc.org

Lost and Found Art by Ade Darmawan
Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Art and Culture
Flea market and street finds are becoming art in the creative hands of artist Ade Darmawan, the founder and director of Ruang Rupa. In his solo exhibition called “Human Resource Development” at Ark Galerie (Sep 23- Oct 24), Jakarta Selatan, Ade turns objects such as second-hand chandeliers, used books and vintage desks into an art with a message. I don’t quite understand what the message is, but I do understand now that lost and found finds can make a beautiful art. So inspiring. Just look at these photos.Category Art and Culture | Tags: Tags: AdeDarmawan, AgungHujatnikajennong, Arkgalerie, BakoelKofi, chandelier, dolls, fleamarket, HumanResourcedevelopment, installation, jakartavintage, luthfihasan, recycle, secondhand, SoloExhibition, streetfinds, used, vintage | 2 Comments

Indonesia 80′s: A Night To Remember
Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Art and Culture

Imaniar owned the stage with her hits such as: Prahara Cinta, Kacau, Harus Kumiliki, and Ironi. Dance and rap are inclusive.
What do you remember about the 80′s most? For many, it is the ridiculous shoulder pads, leg warmers, parachute pants. For me, it is the great music. Music that I can sing along. That’s what I expected when I came to see Indonesia’s 80′s, a concert that presented some musicians who ruled the Indonesian music scene in the 80′s: Vina Panduwinata, Harvey Malaiholo, Trie Utami, Elfa’s Singers, Titi DJ, Imaniar, Mus Mujiono, Deddy Dhukun, Fariz RM, and some others, last week. The seven hour concert has turned the venue –Tennis Indoor Senayan– into a group karaoke where the whole audience sang along and even danced to some upbeat numbers, and yes I was among those who got carried away. The show finale belonged to Fariz RM –the most talented, most productive and most versatile artist in the 80′s. Only he showed up at 1am (in the morning!) when I was too restless to stay (It’s past my bed time, that;s why) . I did enjoy the concert though, maybe also because it was my birthday. Celebrating it with my favorite 80′s musicians is indeed a night I won’t forget.

Extra Ordinary Designs At Desain.ID 2012
Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Art and Culture
The most anticipated event on interior design in Indonesia –Desain.ID 2012– has just kicked off at Jakarta Convention Center last Wednesday. This year it focuses on “design in extra ordinary means”…Well, for me it means I have to find extra ordinary and iconic designs to be highlighted here, not hard at all as there are so many interesting works there. Here is my personal choice. Have a restful weekend!

10 Pieces of Art I Would Bring Home 4
Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Art and Culture
Bazaar Art Jakarta 2012 –the biggest art market in Indonesia, they say– which I attended last weekend was a bit overwhelming for me and I mean it in a good way. There are just too many good things and too little time. From beautiful paintings, installations, kinetics, photography to cool furniture and interior pieces. But for today’s posting I will only focus on the paintings. Paintings that get my attention the first time I saw it, and stick in my mind after I left the exhibition. Yes, I tend to like paintings that are iconic and make a statement. Here is my choice based on: would they look fabulous in my vintage space or would they work with my vintage pieces.

10 Pieces of Art I Would Bring Home 2
Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Art and Culture
The artist, Bismar Siagian, calls his work “Bizzare”, I call it “unique”.
SINS Fine Art Exhibition was held for five days at Guddang Gallery, just a block away from my office. Yet I missed to pay a visit and get myself a little art education. Luckily the day after it was closed down for public, I managed to visit the venue and enjoy the paintings, as –to my advantage– the artists have not come to pick up their works.
Sabila Cakra says “Mom Loves Cat More Than Me #2″, I say the cat looks cute.
Here is my personal choice again based on: would they go with my vintage pieces. Oh by the way all the artists were aged between 18 to 22…What a nice surprise, such nice works created by such fresh minds. Enjoy the artworks and have a restful weekend!
The painting below (“Envy”) by Sidhi Pradipta would really look good in my meeting room, or above the piano at home. Well, I guess it would look good anywhere.
Freezing Smile by Ahmad Agung Ramadya, this is good to cheer up the creative room.

10 Pieces of Art I Would Bring Home
Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Art and Culture
Last weekend I managed to visit Galeri Nasional which was exhibiting Jatim Art Now, an art exhibition by 149 artists from East Jawa. In my humble opinion as an average Indonesian, I must say that I am impressed with the artworks. I think they are world class. As my friend Handoko always says, the choice of art is a personal matter, and here is my personal choice from the exhibition based on: would they go with my vintage pieces?
