  1. Finding Vintage Tapestry At Flea Markets

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Vintage Hunting

This one is my top choice. Just beautiful.

Tapestry, there was time –perhaps between 70′s and 80′s– when every home in Indonesia had it. Framed as hanging decoration, or used as tablecloth, or even as dress. Yes, that was the time when every mother, grand mother, auntie and sister make tapestry as a hobby. And funnily they make almost the same patterns — lady by the window, gentlemen riding horse, lady weaving, and so on. How uniformed! Here are some tapestry decoration which I found randomly in Kebayoran Lama, Taman Puring, and Jalan Riau Bandung. Even more beautiful now that we hardly see it anymore, no?

Gentlemen riding horse for hunting. Look at the dogs below. I like it.

SET ME FREE. A green message in a tapestry. My Favorite.

Familiar figure: lady reading a book.

This one –around 1m x 1m– I supposed was made by more experienced hands as the pattern is big and complicated. Another popular pattern.

  2. Finding Flea Markets in Beijing

Panjiayuan Flea Market Beijing, Jakarta Vintage Luthfi Hasan

Finding flea markets has been my #1 thing to do in almost every city I visit. Including and especially in Beijing where the biggest flea market in Asia is located, that is Panjiayuan flea market. Here there are about 3,000 registered sellers waiting for you every weekend, offering anything and everything. From opium scales, old pipes, Mao and Buddha statues, paper lanterns, jades, ceramics, calligraphy, to painting and… oh the list is so long that I wonder: is there anything that they don’t sell. The big number of sellers and categories of stuff sold in Panjiayuan represents and reminds me of China as a country of many wonders. Yup, everything in this country deserves to be put in the record book. Time.com puts this flea market at #7 of things to do in Beijing, and tripadvisor.com ranks it at #18 as a shopping destination. For Jakarta Vintage, it’s obviously #1…well, no, maybe #2, after the Great Wall of China which is also a must visit. By the way, from this place I took home with me some Cultural Revolution memorabilia like plates and statues of Mao. So predictable, I know, but in my defense those items can hardly be found here in Jakarta or anywhere else outside China.

  3. Finding Flea Markets in Tokyo

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Vintage Hunting

This is Arai Yakushi temple in Tokyo. On Sundays, the temple hosts a flea market with about 40 vendors selling Japanes antiques and vintage

Finding flea markets in Tokyo is surprisingly not as difficult. All the info about it is humongous and just a google away. Keeping up with the schedule is however a different matter. Most of them open every weekend, some others open on the 2nd or 3rd Sunday of every month, one opens only on the 18th and 28th of every month, and so on. The good thing about it though is practically every weekend you have one or two flea markets to go. So during my brief visit last month I managed to visit two of them. The first one was right in Shinjuku, about 7 minute walk from the station. Just like most flea markets in Japan, Hana Zuno flea market is also located in a temple called …Hana-Zuno. Kimono, old coins and dolls are a common view in this flea market. The old glass painting of a Japanese lady in her kimono that you see below, I got it from here. The second flea market is at Arai Yakushi, a little more difficult to find, but it is worth the hassle because in terms of quantity and quality, this place is obviously better. Here antique martavans, imari plates, china and ceramics make me go gaga. Unfortunately they are not the kind of items I would buy in a flea market, besides it’s a bit risky carrying those fragile ceramics in a long flight. So I ended up getting nothing except those photos and a good impression how well the Japanese preserves, manages, and organizes these flea markets, they become not only a tourist destination but also a tradition. Have a good week ahead everyone!

At Arai-Yakushi flea market, antique and old imari paintings are a common view.

  4. My Hunting Field 11: Bogor

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Vintage Hunting

Aside from Jakarta, Bandung, Yogja and Solo, Bogor is the place to go for vintage hunting. The most famous one is Ciawi, where a shopping complex of antiques and antique-likes is located, pretty much like Jalan Surabaya. But for those  who feel demotivated already by the idea of going to Puncak area –like me–, fortunately there are other options. Right in the middle of this chaotic city –between Taman Topi and Pasar Anyar, there are two or three small thrifty shops offering anything from vintage type writers to antique Chinese ceramics. To my surprise, the ceramic collection of one shop is quite good. There are also other places to go in Bogor for those who fancy mid century furniture pieces, all scattered between Jalan Semeru, Cilendek, Semplak and Parung. So when you are in Bogor –the city of angkots–, you can actually stay positive by visiting those places. And stay vintage, of course.

  5. Vintage Valentine At Blok M Plaza

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Vintage Hunting

I dont know if you celebrate Valentine’s Day, because I dont. Never had and never will. Well, …unless it’s vintage, of course. Cinta Tempo Doeloe (Vintage Valentine) is an event organized by Komunitas Djadoel on Feb 11 (today) until Feb 21, 2013 at Blok M Plaza, Kebayoran Baru. Anything you can think of at the vintage department, you will find it here, said Omen, the vintage activist who is in charge of the event. There are over 60 booths participating, offering many different items, and yes, including those antique Mercedez Benz cars, and photos of Indonesian movie stars from the 80′s. Looks like this year I have an excuse to celebrate Valentine. By the way, this 10 day event will also conduct a charity auction, band performance and other entertainment. Happy Vintage Valentine everyone.

Big and beautiful. And they are for sale.

  6. Jakarta Vintage Tour 2

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Vintage Hunting

Jakarta Vintage tour was back again and this time around it was more enlightening. At least in the first stop of the tour at National Museum (Museum Gajah). Thanks to my friend Rima who has been very kind to guide –and educate– us about some important collections in the museum. With Rima as the guide –really a walking museum wikipedia I would say–, two hour walking around in the museum was a quick business. So quick that it was almost lunch time already and we had to rush to Trio. Does anyone remember Trio? An unpretentious, quite authentic Chinese restaurant in Cikini that has been around for 66 years, that’s where we had lunch. Sigit and Lucy have been there once, but the rest of the group is new to this vintage restaurant. Two portions of roasted ducks, fried doves, and two plates of cah kangkung later –honestly I dont remember what else that we ate there– we are full and energized to hit Jalan Surabaya for a vintage hunting, the meat of the program. For those who have visited the place, have you ever stepped into the back area where many more shops are located? You should. This back area is as fun. Ending the vintage tour in Jalan Surabaya is really true to the whole point of having the tour. Lucy came home with some old books and maps, Rosaleen was happy with her new finds (what did you get by the way?). Nicole and Matt were excited with some crystal and glasses for their new home in Jakarta, Sigit bought an old Chinese painting. And shall I mention too that I went home with five Grace Simon and Andi Meriem Mattalata’s vinyls? Lol. Yes, this time around the tour is as fun as it is enlightening.

  7. My Hunting Field 10: Pasar Triwindu Solo

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Vintage Hunting

How can anyone go to Solo without visiting the famous Pasar Triwindu for a vintage therapy and not talking about it? I cant. So here it goes. Visiting Triwindu flea market now is a pleasant experience, compared to …four years ago. It’s clean, well-organized, and it has almost everything in vintage department. Did I mention that the pasar is also located in a new two storied building dedicated to vintage and antiques? Yup. Nett nett–as my friend Geline likes to put it– the only competition comes from Antique shopping arcade in Jalan Surabaya, Jakarta, in terms of “one-stop-vintage-shopping experience”.  After spending almost a whole day here, I managed to secure a set of 70′s chairs and table, vintage doors and Dutch era metal pillars. I told you it has everything, not just typical vintage stuff as I featured here. Have a productive Monday everyone!

  8. My Hunting Field 9: Pasar Beringharjo Yogjakarta

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Vintage Hunting

I had no idea Pasar Beringharjo Yogjakarta has a flea market inside, until recently. What I know of, the market is known more for the batiks, so it’s good that I asked around and insisted that for an old pasar such as this –and it’s in Yogja for good sake– there had to be vendors selling vintage and antique. My conviction paid off. The flea market wing is on the left side of the market, along a narrow alley. There are around ten vendors selling enamels, cookie jars, glasses, tea sets, and –this you can hardly find outside Yogja and Solo– cap batik (= a copper stamp to make printed batik). Like in any flea market, most of the sellers are friendly and eager, especially to a visitor like me. Here are some photos. Stay vintage!

  9. My Hunting Field 8: Jatinegara

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Vintage Hunting

I have for a long time heard about Jatinegara as a flea market spot, but only weeks ago I had a chance to see it myself, thanks to my friend Mbak Tuti who insisted that the place is a must visit for vintage junkies like me. She was right. Like any other flea market, the place offers random items, from camera and painting, to practically anything and everything, and  yes, junks are inclusive. Jatinegara flea market is bigger than Kebayoran Lama and Taman Puring, thus it offers more items. Not necessarily better though. But somehow I was lucky to go home with a green ice thermos and some vintage kain ulos. This is the thing with going to a flea market, you dont know what you are going to get and you end up buying things you dont even think you need or want. Happy New Year to all my friends, hope next year is another great year for everyone.

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Vintage Hunting

Vintage passionistas, I am happy to share the news with you all, that is: Flea Market at Kemang Point is coming this weekend (Oct 5-7). Prita of Artmedium, the initiator and organizer says there will be around 25 booths offering the best of secondhand goods, vintage items and arts and crafts of the local artisans. My Vintage Find: Look What I Get!

An antique glass painting of three ladies in kimonos which I found at Hana-Zuno flea market in Tokyo is a real steal. Besides, it goes just beautiful with the Chinese tennis player lady from Taman Puring. Do you have a street find or a flea market buy that you want to share here? Please send the photo(s) to luthfi_hasan@yahoo.com. Lets find and share!
