Majestic Lounge Chair.
Say hello to Billy, Dotty, and Tidny and their friends. There are 29 (twentynine) new chairs — I mean vintage chairs– from Jakarta Vintage Collection, all in fresh new fabrics. In this collection I try to explore different colors such as black and blue, and gray, oh and red too. Well, practically every color. The motif this time varies too, from the oh-so-in polka dot to graphics and ….plain! I thought the overall theme is fun, quirky and playful. And current. What do you think? And whatever happens with the idea of using the recycled fabrics like in our January collection? That will come soon too, just wait. Click here for more models and details.

At Cafe Mondo, you are forgiven to think that you are in the 60's and 70's.
Is it just me and my vintage-oriented eyes or is vintage suddenly everywhere you go in Jakarta? Well, maybe it’s just me. Maybe it’s just in Kemang. Well maybe it’s just in those two places that I recently visited: Common People Eatery & Bar and Cafe Mondo, both in Kemang. Offering different kind of cuisines, they have one thing in common: both offering vintage feel and ambience in their interior. While Mondo goes vintage all the way– I would say Indonesian vintage, Common People uses vintage-inspired pieces quite lightly and …uncommonly– a bit industrial, dark and modern. Look at the pictures here. Both I like. Viva vintage.

When you are in Yogja, and you are in the mood for vintage spotting, this hotel is worth inspecting: Hotel Sumaryo at Jalan Prawirotaman. I was there few weeks ago, for maybe fifteen minutes, just enough to take pictures and appreciate the vintage design of the hotel. The hotel is actually a big house converted by the owner –The Sumaryos– into a modest bed and breakfast place. What is most interesting is that they keep the house at its original design of the 60′s and 70′s for the guests and a vintage junkie like me to enjoy and appreciate. So you may not stay in the hotel, but for sure the hotel will stay vintage whether or not you stay there. Have a vintageful weekend to you all.

When my friend Ika and I found these magazines at Toko Buku Tera, the game has just begun between us: who is that funny looking guy and who is that sexy model kind of game. Hey I like vintage and antique but it doesn’t mean i can recognize Hollywood celebrities from the 50′s you know. Well, not quite true, as I must admit I know some because they are just too famous, not my fault. Let me mention some: Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood, Rock Hudson, James Dean. The rest I have no clue and I am too lazy to do a little research. So if you know who they are, please let me know so I can get back to Ika and win the guessing game. O by the way, for those who care, Varia was a local entertainment magazine that was popular in 50-70′s. Ciao

Ciputat has for a long time been most famous for furniture shops –there are hundreds of them– specializing in teak and mostly ethnic style. In the past years, however, I have seen more and more mid century furniture being displayed in many shops. One shop owner says that the demand for mod pieces started ten years ago and is getting more popular in the past five years. Anyway, now that i am more experienced and exposed to the process and finishing of furniture, I can tell the replica from the authentic ones, though some pieces are so good that i still have to ask the shop owner to make sure. Here are some photos of the mid century pieces in three shops in Ciputat which I visited yesterday. Have a good Sunday!
I like this style, I say: cool mod.
This mini credenza is so stylish you dont have to put anything on it.
Two lounge chairs, in different style, both from the 50′s and 60′s.
Another credenza, only bigger, same style. Just add TV, and you got style.
Elegant stool with sexy legs and rattan top. You can put it anywhere and mix it with anything. This brings style to any room.

To me there are houses and there are homes. You know the difference. Then there are these houses. I have seen houses like these in Menteng, Kebayoran Baru, and in Bandung, Bogor, Medan, Malang, and Yogjakarta. They are not too big, not too small either, nor they come in dashing…

colors. They are not overly ornamented and definitely not minimalist. They are just right. I don’t know about you but there is a sense of peacefulness, calmness and ‘homeyness’ when i see these houses. Is it the design, the location, or I am just being nostalgic and childish. I just hope they stay this way for long amid the invasion of impersonal mass-clusivity. Have your say and share with me. PEACE
This house has a huge green space, most likely owned by a VIP during the 50′s.
Porch in the front — a typical house in the 50′s and 60′s. (more…)
