  1. Antiques and Vintage Behind The Palace

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Vintage Space

Have you visited a palace to enjoy the beauty of it and then seen the not-so-pretty picture behind it? I have, in my latest visit to Keraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat or Keraton Yogyakarta. After two hours and so enjoying and admiring the Keraton collections, I had a chance to see “the un-palace”. I was referring to the houses behind the palace which belonged to the relatives of the Sultan. During two hour “unauthorized” tour in and out some houses in the palace complex, I had mixed feelings and plenty of questions, I trust you might have too, just by looking at those pictures.  Putting that aside though, I must say it was actually as fun and inspiring inspecting authentic and historical antiques and vintages in spite of their poor condition. Have a nice weekend everyone!

  2. Tanah Teduh: 100% Local, 100% Cool

Last week I went to Tanah Teduh, in Jati Padang, Pejaten, and felt so proud to be an Indonesian. How can I not? Tanah Teduh is a complex of 20 houses built by leading Indonesian architects with a strong commitment to environment and local materials. So in two hectares of land, no tree-felling was allowed, ponds retained for water processing and catchment and, natural light and air flow optimized to reduce electricity consumption. Cool. And all Indonesian-made materials are taking a center stage here, indoor and outdoor. The interior of the show unit for example, is an exhibition of fine Indonesian furniture — all vintage from the 60′s and 70′s. This is where my vintage-obsessed mind goes ecstatic, naturally.  I totally agree with Ronald Akili, the founder of this project who says: “I hope Tanah Teduh will be a source of inspiration and a project that Indonesia could be proud of.”  Bravo architects Andra Matin, Wendy Djuhara, Anthony Liu, Yori Antar, Adi Purnomo, Ahmad Djuhara, Eko Prawoto, Ferry Ridwan, Tan Tik Lam, and Zenin Adrian who made it happen. So last week I was proud and impressed by my fellow Indonesians. I am sure you would be too.  Sources: tanahteduh.com and doinc.org

    Majestic Lounge Chair.

Say hello to Billy, Dotty, and Tidny and their friends. There are 29 (twentynine) new chairs — I mean vintage chairs– from Jakarta Vintage Collection, all in fresh new fabrics. In this collection I try to explore different colors such as black and blue, and gray, oh and red too. Well, practically every color. The motif this time varies too, from the oh-so-in polka dot to graphics and ….plain! I thought the overall theme is fun, quirky and playful. And current. What do you think? And whatever happens with the idea of using the recycled fabrics like in our January collection? That will come soon too, just wait. Click here for more models and details.

    Dark Star arm chair. H: 93cm, W: 46cm, L: 52cm. Ready Stock: 1 (one) unit. Rp. 3,690,000.

THE LATEST CHAIR COLLECTION OF JAKARTA VINTAGE HAS FINALLY ARRIVED. Thank you for waiting. This time around there are  29 (twenty nine) authentic vintage chairs in FRESH NEW FABRICS. Some are IKEA’s fabrics, some are just good looking fabrics which I found in the fabric shop, not necessarily in the home furnishing shop.

I hope you like some– if not all the chairs.

I have also good news for you: WE CAN DO REPLICA/ REPRODUCTION and  CUSTOM MADE chairs too. So if your choice of chair is sold out already,  dont worry. we can make a copy for you, with the same dimensions (or even different!), but with our fabrics, mostly recycled or our own Jakarta Vintage fabrics which will be launched soon. Or you can insist to use your own fabrics too, if you like. So just tell me which chair that you like, which fabrics that you want to use, and I will make it for you in 3-4 week time.

And, may I remind you of this important fact: that ALL the wood for the frame/ body is OLD wood, be it the authentic/original chairs or the replica. It is my commitment and belief that you can be stylish and friendly to the earth at the same time.

I will be happy to get your feedback, just email or text me. I will respond to you soonest. Keep cool and stay vintage:)

  5. Finding Vintage in Kemang

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Vintage Space

At Cafe Mondo, you are forgiven to think that you are in the 60's and 70's.

Is it just me and my vintage-oriented eyes or is vintage suddenly everywhere you go in Jakarta? Well, maybe it’s just me. Maybe it’s just in Kemang. Well maybe it’s just in those two places that I recently visited: Common People Eatery & Bar and Cafe Mondo, both in Kemang. Offering different kind of cuisines, they have one thing in common: both offering vintage feel and ambience in their interior. While Mondo goes vintage all the way– I would say Indonesian vintage, Common People uses vintage-inspired pieces quite lightly and …uncommonly– a bit industrial, dark and modern.  Look at the pictures here. Both I like. Viva vintage.

  6. Jakarta Vintage Tour 2

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Vintage Hunting

Jakarta Vintage tour was back again and this time around it was more enlightening. At least in the first stop of the tour at National Museum (Museum Gajah). Thanks to my friend Rima who has been very kind to guide –and educate– us about some important collections in the museum. With Rima as the guide –really a walking museum wikipedia I would say–, two hour walking around in the museum was a quick business. So quick that it was almost lunch time already and we had to rush to Trio. Does anyone remember Trio? An unpretentious, quite authentic Chinese restaurant in Cikini that has been around for 66 years, that’s where we had lunch. Sigit and Lucy have been there once, but the rest of the group is new to this vintage restaurant. Two portions of roasted ducks, fried doves, and two plates of cah kangkung later –honestly I dont remember what else that we ate there– we are full and energized to hit Jalan Surabaya for a vintage hunting, the meat of the program. For those who have visited the place, have you ever stepped into the back area where many more shops are located? You should. This back area is as fun. Ending the vintage tour in Jalan Surabaya is really true to the whole point of having the tour. Lucy came home with some old books and maps, Rosaleen was happy with her new finds (what did you get by the way?). Nicole and Matt were excited with some crystal and glasses for their new home in Jakarta, Sigit bought an old Chinese painting. And shall I mention too that I went home with five Grace Simon and Andi Meriem Mattalata’s vinyls? Lol. Yes, this time around the tour is as fun as it is enlightening.

  7. Colorful Vintage Home

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Video

Vintage can be bright and colorful too, that’s what this house is trying to achieve through colorful vintage items in the interior. Sofa in recycled flowery fabrics, chairs in colorful faux leathers, paintings in dashing colors, et cetera. This video clip is one segment in a Dulux sponsored TV program “Lets Colour” aired at 9am on Sundays on Metro TV. By the way the house belongs to Jakarta Vintage. Hope you like it too.

  8. Vintage For Auction in Kemang (Part 4): The Bidding

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Video

The Retro & Beyond Vintage Auction moment finally took place at the Lippo Mall Kemang Village, on November 10, 2012. This is the first event as well as the launch event of Jakarta Vintage. I would like to thank you all for participating in the event and making it memorable. For those who missed the auction –and the action, have a look at this video, shot and edited by Dimaz. Looking forward to seeing you in the next events. Have a vintageful day:)

  9. Black and Beautiful in Kuningan

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Cool Vintage

This big deer head makes a beautiful presence and personality.

Black is beautiful, and it’s so true in the case of Otel Lobby restaurant in Kuningan. The decor concept is actually simple: a hotel lobby with a touch of New York –perhaps, gothic –obviously, and vintage –of course. So I think. When I enter the restaurant, I feel like entering a different universe. The big industrial clock, the ping pong ball chandelier, the deer head, and all one off pieces blend beautifully. It gets even better when crispy duck salad, famous beef wellington and yummy home made ice cream are served on your table. No wonder I always want to come again and again. For the good taste in food, decor and overall ambience that is.

  10. Extra Ordinary Designs At Desain.ID 2012

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Art and Culture

Table lamps, made of bicycle wheels. Beautiful execution of reduce, reuse, and recycle.

The most anticipated event on interior design in Indonesia –Desain.ID 2012– has just kicked off at Jakarta Convention Center last Wednesday. This year it focuses on “design in extra ordinary means”…Well, for me it means I have to find extra ordinary and iconic designs to be highlighted here, not hard at all as there are so many interesting works there. Here is my personal choice. Have a restful weekend!
