The sharing and meeting session with around 50 vintage enthusiasts at Rumah Inspirasi finally took place, on a pouring Saturday. I got many interesting questions from the audience such as: how to decor a small apartment with vintage items? how to take care of old vinyls? who is your favorite vintage singer? and: what is the cheapest vintage item that I ever bought? The last one is a bit tough because … I have plenty of answers. That Vietnamese lady ceramic doll…I got it at USD 1. The handsome Samsonite briefcase in camel was only Rp 35K –now the similar item can hardly be found and if any at all, it would cost seven times the price. Well, putting that aside, I am glad that through this talk show I can share what vintage can do to us all –and trust me it’s all good: it’s stylish and unique, it’s affordable (o yes, compared to antiques, that is), it’s environment friendly (because no new energy produced), it makes you creative (mixing it with current items can be a challenge for many people), and did I say it’s cool too? Now I want to thank the team at Martha Stewart Living Indonesia who gave me the chance to share those messages and to the participants who came to get inspired, to inspire and stayed till the end. Majestic Lounge Chair.
Say hello to Billy, Dotty, and Tidny and their friends. There are 29 (twentynine) new chairs — I mean vintage chairs– from Jakarta Vintage Collection, all in fresh new fabrics. In this collection I try to explore different colors such as black and blue, and gray, oh and red too. Well, practically every color. The motif this time varies too, from the oh-so-in polka dot to graphics and ….plain! I thought the overall theme is fun, quirky and playful. And current. What do you think? THE LATEST CHAIR COLLECTION OF JAKARTA VINTAGE HAS FINALLY ARRIVED. Thank you for waiting. This time around there are 29 (twenty nine) authentic vintage chairs in FRESH NEW FABRICS. Some are IKEA’s fabrics, some are just good looking fabrics which I found in the fabric shop, not necessarily in the home furnishing shop.
I hope you like some– if not all the chairs.
I have also good news for you: WE CAN DO REPLICA/ REPRODUCTION and CUSTOM MADE chairs too. So if your choice of chair is sold out already, dont worry. we can make a copy for you, with the same dimensions (or even different!), but with our fabrics, mostly recycled or our own Jakarta Vintage fabrics which will be launched soon. Or you can insist to use your own fabrics too, if you like. So just tell me which chair that you like, which fabrics that you want to use, and I will make it for you in 3-4 week time.
And, may I remind you of this important fact: that ALL the wood for the frame/ body is OLD wood, be it the authentic/original chairs or the replica. It is my commitment and belief that you can be stylish and friendly to the earth at the same time.

Vintage as we know it can be slightly different from a Javanese point of view. Look at this house in Yogja, which to me looks like a priyayi house, if you know what I mean. Every single thing in the house is either antique or vintage –all in fine condition– and of course with a strong Javanese touch. According to Sigit, the owner, who is not a priyayi by the way –he is actually a banker based in Jakarta– it is important that things in the house are kept in one theme, in harmony with each other and in order. Typical Javanese philosophy. And somehow it works just fine. This home is just beautiful. PS: Priyayi as Clifford Greetz put it: is the traditional aristocratic class of the elites in traditional Javanese society.

This big deer head makes a beautiful presence and personality.
Black is beautiful, and it’s so true in the case of Otel Lobby restaurant in Kuningan. The decor concept is actually simple: a hotel lobby with a touch of New York –perhaps, gothic –obviously, and vintage –of course. So I think. When I enter the restaurant, I feel like entering a different universe. The big industrial clock, the ping pong ball chandelier, the deer head, and all one off pieces blend beautifully. It gets even better when crispy duck salad, famous beef wellington and yummy home made ice cream are served on your table. No wonder I always want to come again and again. For the good taste in food, decor and overall ambience that is.

The most anticipated event on interior design in Indonesia –Desain.ID 2012– has just kicked off at Jakarta Convention Center last Wednesday. This year it focuses on “design in extra ordinary means”…Well, for me it means I have to find extra ordinary and iconic designs to be highlighted here, not hard at all as there are so many interesting works there. Remember my posting in June titled “Vintage and The City” which highlighted an apartment in Senayan? Last month the Home & Decor magazine –with the tagline: stylish living made easy– visited the apartment and shot it for its August edition. So last week I bought a copy of the magazine, and when I flipped pages 68-75, it looks –shall i say it– more beautiful than the real thing. But of course. The photographer –Erwin Panjaitan– is a pro, so is the stylist, Stephani F Halim. Here are the photos from my iPhone. The title of the article is “Prudent Treasures”, but I would call it “Vintage Invasion In Modern Apartment”. What do you think? O by the way the space interior design is by me.

Bazaar Art Jakarta 2012 –the biggest art market in Indonesia, they say– which I attended last weekend was a bit overwhelming for me and I mean it in a good way. There are just too many good things and too little time. From beautiful paintings, installations, kinetics, photography to cool furniture and interior pieces. But for today’s posting I will only focus on the paintings. Paintings that get my attention the first time I saw it, and stick in my mind after I left the exhibition. Yes, I tend to like paintings that are iconic and make a statement. Here is my choice based on: would they look fabulous in my vintage space or would they work with my vintage pieces.

Last weekend I managed to visit Galeri Nasional which was exhibiting Jatim Art Now, an art exhibition by 149 artists from East Jawa. In my humble opinion as an average Indonesian, I must say that I am impressed with the artworks. I think they are world class. As my friend Handoko always says, the choice of art is a personal matter, and here is my personal choice from the exhibition based on: would they go with my vintage pieces?

Here is my vintage collection which i display at home. They are flea market and street finds from Taman Puring, Kebayoran Lama, Jalan Surabaya, Semarang, Saigon, Beijing and Tokyo. I am not into collecting any particular objects, i just collect what i like when i spot it. Practically random. I was too sometimes confused and therefore made lots of bad judgement –i still do though, flea market situation can be overwhelming you know– but eventually i develop my own taste and interest, so I only take pieces that i think can work with other stuff.
Suitcases from 70′s which i now use for work. Good for laptop as it protects alright. (more…)
