  1. 10 Pieces of Art I Would Bring Home

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Vintage Space

Perawan Hujan (Virgin of Rain) by Muhamad Taufiq.

Nowadays everyone seems to be obsessed with going global and the whole globalization thing….except Ika Vantiani, Muhammad Taufiq (Emte), and Rukmunal Hakim. The three artists are proofing that local is the way to go. And it can be cool too. Or dark. Or playful and beautiful. I am talking here about their art works which are now being exhibited at Eastern Promise Pub & Restaurant in Kemang under the theme: LOKALISASI. Ika is known for her vintage styled, paper-based collage, while Emte and Rukmunal are illustrators with strong local flavor in their works. Through their works dare I say that local is the new global, perhaps? I dont know, but now with over 30 pieces of arts that they are exhibiting, I wonder which one I would bring home to fill my vintage space. Maybe the ones I feature here?:

Before The Climb by Ika Vantiani. Posing in style before climbing the magnificent Borobudur, that’s what these folks from the 70′s trying to do.

Awug by Rukmunal Hakim. Awug is a coconut-based sweet cake from West Java where the artist lives.

Ritual by Emte. This kind of ritual you may find in Bali, and in some other places in Indonesia.

On Top, another collage by Ika Vantiani. Now that they reach the top of Borobudur, another pose for the camera would not hurt, no?

Another Rukmunal’s interpretation of two famous traditional drink from West Java: Bandrek & Bajigur.

Sesajen Minahasa (Offering a la Minahasa) by Emte. This tradition is apparently shared everywhere in indonesia, including Minahasa, I had no idea.

I thought it was an outdoor cafe, but it was actually a Garden Party according to Ika. Looking at this photo, dont you feel nostalgic about the cool and peaceful days of the 70′s?

Bandros is a soft and sweet, cup cake-like snack from West Java. This is how Rukmanul visualizes it. Interesting!

Colenak, another local sweet from West Jawa. This colenak, you dip it on coconut sugar and it’s a heaven. Rukmanul shows this just like it.

  2. Finding Vintage Tapestry At Flea Markets

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Vintage Hunting

This one is my top choice. Just beautiful.

Tapestry, there was time –perhaps between 70′s and 80′s– when every home in Indonesia had it. Framed as hanging decoration, or used as tablecloth, or even as dress. Yes, that was the time when every mother, grand mother, auntie and sister make tapestry as a hobby. And funnily they make almost the same patterns — lady by the window, gentlemen riding horse, lady weaving, and so on. How uniformed! Here are some tapestry decoration which I found randomly in Kebayoran Lama, Taman Puring, and Jalan Riau Bandung. Even more beautiful now that we hardly see it anymore, no?

Gentlemen riding horse for hunting. Look at the dogs below. I like it.

SET ME FREE. A green message in a tapestry. My Favorite.

Familiar figure: lady reading a book.

This one –around 1m x 1m– I supposed was made by more experienced hands as the pattern is big and complicated. Another popular pattern.

  3. Tanah Teduh: 100% Local, 100% Cool

Last week I went to Tanah Teduh, in Jati Padang, Pejaten, and felt so proud to be an Indonesian. How can I not? Tanah Teduh is a complex of 20 houses built by leading Indonesian architects with a strong commitment to environment and local materials. So in two hectares of land, no tree-felling was allowed, ponds retained for water processing and catchment and, natural light and air flow optimized to reduce electricity consumption. Cool. And all Indonesian-made materials are taking a center stage here, indoor and outdoor. The interior of the show unit for example, is an exhibition of fine Indonesian furniture — all vintage from the 60′s and 70′s. This is where my vintage-obsessed mind goes ecstatic, naturally.  I totally agree with Ronald Akili, the founder of this project who says: “I hope Tanah Teduh will be a source of inspiration and a project that Indonesia could be proud of.”  Bravo architects Andra Matin, Wendy Djuhara, Anthony Liu, Yori Antar, Adi Purnomo, Ahmad Djuhara, Eko Prawoto, Ferry Ridwan, Tan Tik Lam, and Zenin Adrian who made it happen. So last week I was proud and impressed by my fellow Indonesians. I am sure you would be too.  Sources: tanahteduh.com and doinc.org

    Majestic Lounge Chair.

Say hello to Billy, Dotty, and Tidny and their friends. There are 29 (twentynine) new chairs — I mean vintage chairs– from Jakarta Vintage Collection, all in fresh new fabrics. In this collection I try to explore different colors such as black and blue, and gray, oh and red too. Well, practically every color. The motif this time varies too, from the oh-so-in polka dot to graphics and ….plain! I thought the overall theme is fun, quirky and playful. And current. What do you think? And whatever happens with the idea of using the recycled fabrics like in our January collection? That will come soon too, just wait. Click here for more models and details.

THE LATEST CHAIR COLLECTION OF JAKARTA VINTAGE HAS FINALLY ARRIVED. Thank you for waiting. This time around there are  29 (twenty nine) authentic vintage chairs in FRESH NEW FABRICS. Some are IKEA’s fabrics, some are just good looking fabrics which I found in the fabric shop, not necessarily in the home furnishing shop.

I hope you like some– if not all the chairs.

I have also good news for you: WE CAN DO REPLICA/ REPRODUCTION and  CUSTOM MADE chairs too. So if your choice of chair is sold out already,  dont worry. we can make a copy for you, with the same dimensions (or even different!), but with our fabrics, mostly recycled or our own Jakarta Vintage fabrics which will be launched soon. Or you can insist to use your own fabrics too, if you like. So just tell me which chair that you like, which fabrics that you want to use, and I will make it for you in 3-4 week time.

And, may I remind you of this important fact: that ALL the wood for the frame/ body is OLD wood, be it the authentic/original chairs or the replica. It is my commitment and belief that you can be stylish and friendly to the earth at the same time.

I will be happy to get your feedback, just email or text me. I will respond to you soonest. Keep cool and stay vintage:)

  6. Finding Vintage in Kemang

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Vintage Space

At Cafe Mondo, you are forgiven to think that you are in the 60's and 70's.

Is it just me and my vintage-oriented eyes or is vintage suddenly everywhere you go in Jakarta? Well, maybe it’s just me. Maybe it’s just in Kemang. Well maybe it’s just in those two places that I recently visited: Common People Eatery & Bar and Cafe Mondo, both in Kemang. Offering different kind of cuisines, they have one thing in common: both offering vintage feel and ambience in their interior. While Mondo goes vintage all the way– I would say Indonesian vintage, Common People uses vintage-inspired pieces quite lightly and …uncommonly– a bit industrial, dark and modern.  Look at the pictures here. Both I like. Viva vintage.

  7. Jakarta Vintage Tour 2

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Vintage Hunting

Jakarta Vintage tour was back again and this time around it was more enlightening. At least in the first stop of the tour at National Museum (Museum Gajah). Thanks to my friend Rima who has been very kind to guide –and educate– us about some important collections in the museum. With Rima as the guide –really a walking museum wikipedia I would say–, two hour walking around in the museum was a quick business. So quick that it was almost lunch time already and we had to rush to Trio. Does anyone remember Trio? An unpretentious, quite authentic Chinese restaurant in Cikini that has been around for 66 years, that’s where we had lunch. Sigit and Lucy have been there once, but the rest of the group is new to this vintage restaurant. Two portions of roasted ducks, fried doves, and two plates of cah kangkung later –honestly I dont remember what else that we ate there– we are full and energized to hit Jalan Surabaya for a vintage hunting, the meat of the program. For those who have visited the place, have you ever stepped into the back area where many more shops are located? You should. This back area is as fun. Ending the vintage tour in Jalan Surabaya is really true to the whole point of having the tour. Lucy came home with some old books and maps, Rosaleen was happy with her new finds (what did you get by the way?). Nicole and Matt were excited with some crystal and glasses for their new home in Jakarta, Sigit bought an old Chinese painting. And shall I mention too that I went home with five Grace Simon and Andi Meriem Mattalata’s vinyls? Lol. Yes, this time around the tour is as fun as it is enlightening.

  8. My Hunting Field 8: Jatinegara

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Vintage Hunting

I have for a long time heard about Jatinegara as a flea market spot, but only weeks ago I had a chance to see it myself, thanks to my friend Mbak Tuti who insisted that the place is a must visit for vintage junkies like me. She was right. Like any other flea market, the place offers random items, from camera and painting, to practically anything and everything, and  yes, junks are inclusive. Jatinegara flea market is bigger than Kebayoran Lama and Taman Puring, thus it offers more items. Not necessarily better though. But somehow I was lucky to go home with a green ice thermos and some vintage kain ulos. This is the thing with going to a flea market, you dont know what you are going to get and you end up buying things you dont even think you need or want. Happy New Year to all my friends, hope next year is another great year for everyone.

  9. Colorful Vintage Home

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Video

Vintage can be bright and colorful too, that’s what this house is trying to achieve through colorful vintage items in the interior. Sofa in recycled flowery fabrics, chairs in colorful faux leathers, paintings in dashing colors, et cetera. This video clip is one segment in a Dulux sponsored TV program “Lets Colour” aired at 9am on Sundays on Metro TV. By the way the house belongs to Jakarta Vintage. Hope you like it too.

My Vintage Find: Look What I Get!

An antique glass painting of three ladies in kimonos which I found at Hana-Zuno flea market in Tokyo is a real steal. Besides, it goes just beautiful with the Chinese tennis player lady from Taman Puring. Do you have a street find or a flea market buy that you want to share here? Please send the photo(s) to luthfi_hasan@yahoo.com. Lets find and share!
