Jakarta Vintage tour was back again and this time around it was more enlightening. At least in the first stop of the tour at National Museum (Museum Gajah). Thanks to my friend Rima who has been very kind to guide –and educate– us about some important collections in the museum. With Rima as the guide –really a walking museum wikipedia I would say–, two hour walking around in the museum was a quick business. So quick that it was almost lunch time already and we had to rush to Trio. Does anyone remember Trio? An unpretentious, quite authentic Chinese restaurant in Cikini that has been around for 66 years, that’s where we had lunch. Sigit and Lucy have been there once, but the rest of the group is new to this vintage restaurant. Two portions of roasted ducks, fried doves, and two plates of cah kangkung later –honestly I dont remember what else that we ate there– we are full and energized to hit Jalan Surabaya for a vintage hunting, the meat of the program. For those who have visited the place, have you ever stepped into the back area where many more shops are located? You should. This back area is as fun. Ending the vintage tour in Jalan Surabaya is really true to the whole point of having the tour. Lucy came home with some old books and maps, Rosaleen was happy with her new finds (what did you get by the way?). Nicole and Matt were excited with some crystal and glasses for their new home in Jakarta, Sigit bought an old Chinese painting. And shall I mention too that I went home with five Grace Simon and Andi Meriem Mattalata’s vinyls? Lol. Yes, this time around the tour is as fun as it is enlightening.

Jalan Surabaya in Video
Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Video, Vintage Hunting
Kariim sent me a video of our trip to Jalan Surabaya several weeks ago. You know what the place has to offer, well practically anything antique and vintage, however our visit somehow focused only on vinyls, turntables and cassettes, as you can see in the video. Not exactly doing justice to the place, but through this video I hope you can get the picture of what this famous place looks like. Kariim shot, developed and edited it all by himself, with a little help from the legendary Rolling Stones’ song: Hand of Fate. Have a good week ahead everyone.

My Hunting Field 4: Jalan Surabaya
Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Vintage Hunting
Jalan Surabaya is the first and only name came to mind when i started developing my interest in antiques (hmm perhaps “antique-like” is more correct) some five years ago. I must admit hunting antiques and vintage here is very pleasant and convenient as they have everything you can think of in the antique department…Everything is displayed quite nicely, very well organized. Well, it is a foreign tourist destination in the first place, and the most mentioned name when people search for antiques in Jakarta and in fact included in the official map and calendar of the tourism board.Category Vintage Hunting | Tags: Tags: antique, antiques, indonesia, indonesiatourismboard, jakarta, jakartamap, jalansurabaya, menteng, old, tourist, touristdesitnation, touristmap, vintage | 3 Comments

The Objects of My Affection 2
Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Vintage Space
Here is my vintage collection which i display at home. They are flea market and street finds from Taman Puring, Kebayoran Lama, Jalan Surabaya, Semarang, Saigon, Beijing and Tokyo. I am not into collecting any particular objects, i just collect what i like when i spot it. Practically random. I was too sometimes confused and therefore made lots of bad judgement –i still do though, flea market situation can be overwhelming you know– but eventually i develop my own taste and interest, so I only take pieces that i think can work with other stuff.
Suitcases from 70′s which i now use for work. Good for laptop as it protects alright.
