Last week I went to Tanah Teduh, in Jati Padang, Pejaten, and felt so proud to be an Indonesian. How can I not? Tanah Teduh is a complex of 20 houses built by leading Indonesian architects with a strong commitment to environment and local materials. So in two hectares of land, no tree-felling was allowed, ponds retained for water processing and catchment and, natural light and air flow optimized to reduce electricity consumption. Cool. And all Indonesian-made materials are taking a center stage here, indoor and outdoor. The interior of the show unit for example, is an exhibition of fine Indonesian furniture — all vintage from the 60′s and 70′s. This is where my vintage-obsessed mind goes ecstatic, naturally. I totally agree with Ronald Akili, the founder of this project who says: “I hope Tanah Teduh will be a source of inspiration and a project that Indonesia could be proud of.” Bravo architects Andra Matin, Wendy Djuhara, Anthony Liu, Yori Antar, Adi Purnomo, Ahmad Djuhara, Eko Prawoto, Ferry Ridwan, Tan Tik Lam, and Zenin Adrian who made it happen. So last week I was proud and impressed by my fellow Indonesians. I am sure you would be too. Sources: tanahteduh.com and doinc.org

Vintage and The City 2: Home & Decor
Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Vintage Space

An abstract painting, a vintage cabinet, an Aedi sofa, and a marrocoan coffee table. A warm welcome to the tiny apartment.
Remember my posting in June titled “Vintage and The City” which highlighted an apartment in Senayan? Last month the Home & Decor magazine –with the tagline: stylish living made easy– visited the apartment and shot it for its August edition. So last week I bought a copy of the magazine, and when I flipped pages 68-75, it looks –shall i say it– more beautiful than the real thing. But of course. The photographer –Erwin Panjaitan– is a pro, so is the stylist, Stephani F Halim. Here are the photos from my iPhone. The title of the article is “Prudent Treasures”, but I would call it “Vintage Invasion In Modern Apartment”. What do you think? O by the way the space interior design is by me.

Romancing Vintage Jakarta: When The Sky Was Blue…
Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Cool Vintage

Yes, this is Jakarta in the 50′s. Amazingly modern and clean. That book that I found at a secondhand book shop –Tanah Air Kita by N.A. Douwes Dekker– I can’t seem to get enough of it. It has so many really great photos of Indonesia in the 50′s. For today’s post, however, I only pick photos of Jakarta –or Jacarta according to the book– because based on the photos I think Jakarta as a city looked very modern, and very cultured too, just fantastic. I am not trying to be political but I think whoever wins the governor election today, he better looks at these photos. They are the reminder to all of us that Jakarta was once and can be a fine city.
Kemayoran, the first international airport. When the sky was blue.

Vintage and the City
Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Cool Vintage
Living in an apartment in the heart of the city is both practical and convenient. And the interior design tends to follow accordingly: modern, clean cut, no clutter, and minimalist. This featured apartment in Senayan however is trying to “tone down” the modernism and minimalism and add some vintage, ethnic and quirky touches in the decoration. Here is another vintage invasion in the modern Jakarta, in the home of a Japanese expat, Mr Akira.
A mid century cabinet, a retro telephone, a vietnamese lacquer bowl, and an abstract painting by Kukuh, all go together in the living room.

Finding Vintage at Brightspot
Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Cool Vintage
I am glad I made time to visit the most happening event in the creative fashion calendar in Indonesia: the 8th Brightspot Market (“a curated market of things cool”) in Gandaria City last weekend. And I am glad too that vintage is part of it. Yes, vintage presence can be seen everywhere here. Here are some photos of vintage products, look and feel from Brightspot point of view.
From 5000 visitors in the first event three years ago to over 55,000 passionate followers in the last event, Brightspot has made a spot among the hipster generation.
