  1. Tanah Teduh: 100% Local, 100% Cool

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Art and Culture

Last week I went to Tanah Teduh, in Jati Padang, Pejaten, and felt so proud to be an Indonesian. How can I not? Tanah Teduh is a complex of 20 houses built by leading Indonesian architects with a strong commitment to environment and local materials. So in two hectares of land, no tree-felling was allowed, ponds retained for water processing and catchment and, natural light and air flow optimized to reduce electricity consumption. Cool. And all Indonesian-made materials are taking a center stage here, indoor and outdoor. The interior of the show unit for example, is an exhibition of fine Indonesian furniture — all vintage from the 60′s and 70′s. This is where my vintage-obsessed mind goes ecstatic, naturally.  I totally agree with Ronald Akili, the founder of this project who says: “I hope Tanah Teduh will be a source of inspiration and a project that Indonesia could be proud of.”  Bravo architects Andra Matin, Wendy Djuhara, Anthony Liu, Yori Antar, Adi Purnomo, Ahmad Djuhara, Eko Prawoto, Ferry Ridwan, Tan Tik Lam, and Zenin Adrian who made it happen. So last week I was proud and impressed by my fellow Indonesians. I am sure you would be too.  Sources: tanahteduh.com and doinc.org

    Majestic Lounge Chair.

Say hello to Billy, Dotty, and Tidny and their friends. There are 29 (twentynine) new chairs — I mean vintage chairs– from Jakarta Vintage Collection, all in fresh new fabrics. In this collection I try to explore different colors such as black and blue, and gray, oh and red too. Well, practically every color. The motif this time varies too, from the oh-so-in polka dot to graphics and ….plain! I thought the overall theme is fun, quirky and playful. And current. What do you think? And whatever happens with the idea of using the recycled fabrics like in our January collection? That will come soon too, just wait. Click here for more models and details.

    Dark Star arm chair. H: 93cm, W: 46cm, L: 52cm. Ready Stock: 1 (one) unit. Rp. 3,690,000.

THE LATEST CHAIR COLLECTION OF JAKARTA VINTAGE HAS FINALLY ARRIVED. Thank you for waiting. This time around there are  29 (twenty nine) authentic vintage chairs in FRESH NEW FABRICS. Some are IKEA’s fabrics, some are just good looking fabrics which I found in the fabric shop, not necessarily in the home furnishing shop.

I hope you like some– if not all the chairs.

I have also good news for you: WE CAN DO REPLICA/ REPRODUCTION and  CUSTOM MADE chairs too. So if your choice of chair is sold out already,  dont worry. we can make a copy for you, with the same dimensions (or even different!), but with our fabrics, mostly recycled or our own Jakarta Vintage fabrics which will be launched soon. Or you can insist to use your own fabrics too, if you like. So just tell me which chair that you like, which fabrics that you want to use, and I will make it for you in 3-4 week time.

And, may I remind you of this important fact: that ALL the wood for the frame/ body is OLD wood, be it the authentic/original chairs or the replica. It is my commitment and belief that you can be stylish and friendly to the earth at the same time.

I will be happy to get your feedback, just email or text me. I will respond to you soonest. Keep cool and stay vintage:)

  4. Finding Vintage in Kemang

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Vintage Space

At Cafe Mondo, you are forgiven to think that you are in the 60's and 70's.

Is it just me and my vintage-oriented eyes or is vintage suddenly everywhere you go in Jakarta? Well, maybe it’s just me. Maybe it’s just in Kemang. Well maybe it’s just in those two places that I recently visited: Common People Eatery & Bar and Cafe Mondo, both in Kemang. Offering different kind of cuisines, they have one thing in common: both offering vintage feel and ambience in their interior. While Mondo goes vintage all the way– I would say Indonesian vintage, Common People uses vintage-inspired pieces quite lightly and …uncommonly– a bit industrial, dark and modern.  Look at the pictures here. Both I like. Viva vintage.

  5. Vintage and The City 2: Home & Decor

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Vintage Space

An abstract painting, a vintage cabinet, an Aedi sofa, and a marrocoan coffee table. A warm welcome to the tiny apartment.

Remember my posting in June titled “Vintage and The City” which highlighted an apartment in Senayan? Last month the Home & Decor magazine –with the tagline: stylish living made easy– visited the apartment and shot it for its August edition. So last week I bought a copy of the magazine, and when I flipped pages 68-75, it looks –shall i say it– more beautiful than the real thing. But of course. The photographer –Erwin Panjaitan– is a pro, so is the stylist, Stephani F Halim. Here are the photos from my iPhone. The title of the article is “Prudent Treasures”, but I would call it “Vintage Invasion In Modern Apartment”. What do you think? O by the way the space interior design is by me.

  6. 10 Pieces of Art I Would Bring Home 3

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Art and Culture

Jimi Hendrix singing and playing a guitar. A knock out. And unfortunately sold out.

Big. Bold. Beautiful. That is my impression when I saw these paintings two days ago at Philo Art Space, Kemang Timur. I love the color composition too, like it’s meant to match with modern space. This is the kind of painting that would turn any space –vintage or not– into a beautiful art gallery. The kind of painting that “owns” any space with confidence and presence. Paintings that “demand” attention and stay in your photographic memory even after you don’t see them anymore. I definitely want them all for my home and my office. Not just ten. Congratulations to Tommy F Awuy the curator and Amalia Ahmad for exhibiting such iconic paintings. And bravo of course to Erizal As the artist for the great works.

  7. Romancing Vintage Jakarta: When The Sky Was Blue…

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Cool Vintage

Yes, this is Jakarta in the 50′s. Amazingly modern and clean.

That book that I found at a secondhand book shop –Tanah Air Kita by N.A. Douwes Dekker– I can’t seem  to get enough of it. It has so many really great photos of Indonesia in the 50′s. For today’s post, however, I only pick photos of Jakarta –or Jacarta according to the book– because based on the photos I think Jakarta as a city looked very modern, and very cultured too, just fantastic. I am not trying to be political but I think whoever wins the governor election today, he better looks at these photos. They are the reminder to all of us that Jakarta was once and can be  a fine city.

  8. Vintage and the City

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Cool Vintage

Living in an apartment in the heart of the city is both practical and convenient. And the interior design tends to follow accordingly: modern, clean cut, no clutter, and minimalist. This featured apartment in Senayan however is trying to “tone down” the modernism and minimalism and add some vintage, ethnic and quirky touches in the decoration. Here is another vintage invasion in the modern Jakarta, in the home of a Japanese expat, Mr Akira.

A mid century cabinet, a retro telephone, a vietnamese lacquer bowl, and an abstract painting by Kukuh, all go together in the living room.

  9. Vintage At Work (Part 2): In Video

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Video, Vintage Space

How vintage blends with people and gadgets at work as seen in our first posting can now be seen more in this video. A cut from the Dulux Lets Color program on Metro TV broadcast in April 2012. Enjoy and be inspired.

  10. Finding Vintage at Brightspot

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Cool Vintage

I am glad I made time to visit the most happening event in the creative fashion calendar in Indonesia: the 8th Brightspot Market (“a curated market of things cool”) in Gandaria City last weekend. And I am glad too that vintage is part of it. Yes, vintage presence can be seen everywhere here. Here are some photos of vintage products, look and feel from Brightspot point of view.

From 5000 visitors in the first event three years ago to over 55,000 passionate followers in the last event, Brightspot has made a spot among the hipster generation.
