  1. Finding Mao in China

Finding Mao in China Jakarta Vintage Luthfi Hasan

In China Mao is so ubiquitous, in a painting shop in Panjiayuan flea market, Beijing.

Thirty-seven years after his death, he is still alive everywhere you go in China. Even in Panjiayuan flea market in Beijing, as you can see here. Mao Zedong, the founding father of People’s Republic of China, is present in the form of painting, calligraphy, photo, statue, plate, mug, and well, practically anything. His figure seems to remain popular as the newer icons such as Deng Xiaoping and Hu Jintao, the more current China leaders, come and go. To many Mao never dies, pretty much like vintage, to me. Have a nice weekend everyone :)

  2. Vintage and The City 2: Home & Decor

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Vintage Space

An abstract painting, a vintage cabinet, an Aedi sofa, and a marrocoan coffee table. A warm welcome to the tiny apartment.

Remember my posting in June titled “Vintage and The City” which highlighted an apartment in Senayan? Last month the Home & Decor magazine –with the tagline: stylish living made easy– visited the apartment and shot it for its August edition. So last week I bought a copy of the magazine, and when I flipped pages 68-75, it looks –shall i say it– more beautiful than the real thing. But of course. The photographer –Erwin Panjaitan– is a pro, so is the stylist, Stephani F Halim. Here are the photos from my iPhone. The title of the article is “Prudent Treasures”, but I would call it “Vintage Invasion In Modern Apartment”. What do you think? O by the way the space interior design is by me.

  3. Vintage Posters At Gedung Joang 45

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Vintage Space

Today is the 67th celebration of our independence and I know exactly what I was going to write here. Vintage, of course, what else. This time around it’s about vintage posters at  Gedung Joang 45, a museum on Indonesian journey from the colonization time until finally free and independent. This is the first time I checked out the museum and to be honest I almost got bored until I saw these interesting posters. These posters were made under the Japanese occupation in Indonesia, aimed at raising nationalism and mobilizing support towards the Nippon. With patriotic, heroic and nationalistic look, tone and manner, basically these posters help this country get its independence. Herewith I share some of them here — and let’s all thank these posters. Merdeka!

  4. Vintage Fair At Kemang

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Vintage Hunting

Yesterday was a fun day for vintage passionistas especially for those who had a chance to visit Vintage Fair held by tokove in Kemang Selatan, and I was lucky I was one of them. I got there around 4.30 when the weather was just nice. It was also nice to see some familiar faces especially among the sellers, who own shops in Taman Puring, Kebayoran Lama and Blok M Square. As for the items being offered, which includes vinyls, books, comics, posters, CD and cassettes, I saw some other interesting pieces which I don’t see that often: toys, calendar and ads. What amazed me though is how these passionista fellows get and gather that old pieces and keep them so neatly almost in original condition. I guess it’s passion, no? Here are the photos of yesterday event. Happy Monday!

Koes Plus, Guruh Gipsy and Badai Pasti Berlalu are among legends in Indonesia music industry, and the most sought after in the vintage community.

You can touch, read, try and it's OK if you don't buy, Cool.

  5. Vintage and the City

Posted by Luthfi Hasan in Cool Vintage

Living in an apartment in the heart of the city is both practical and convenient. And the interior design tends to follow accordingly: modern, clean cut, no clutter, and minimalist. This featured apartment in Senayan however is trying to “tone down” the modernism and minimalism and add some vintage, ethnic and quirky touches in the decoration. Here is another vintage invasion in the modern Jakarta, in the home of a Japanese expat, Mr Akira.

A mid century cabinet, a retro telephone, a vietnamese lacquer bowl, and an abstract painting by Kukuh, all go together in the living room.

An antique glass painting of three ladies in kimonos which I found at Hana-Zuno flea market in Tokyo is a real steal. Besides, it goes just beautiful with the Chinese tennis player lady from Taman Puring. Do you have a street find or a flea market buy that you want to share here? Please send the photo(s) to luthfi_hasan@yahoo.com. Lets find and share!
